| Aaron's recent work utilizes the letterforms in words culled from surfing terminology; words such as Dealing, Rock Dance and Shine are broken down into individual letters and used as compositional elements. Parazette’s work continues the historical linage of “hard-edge painting”, and he shares particular affinities of high craft and color sensibilities with the California “Abstract Classicists” – Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, Frederick Hammersley and John McLaughlin. With the recent integration of surfing word/terms in his paintings, Parazette creates complex compositions that are comprised of overlapping letters (D, e, a, l, i, n, g). The result is a fragmented composition that begins in geometric frenzy. By infilling the geometry with color combinations, Parazette is able to emotionally affect the viewer with complicated, vibrant color r elationships. Aaron Parazette was born in 1960 and grew up in Southern California, where he developed his lifelong passion for surfing. After graduating from Claremont Graduate School of Painting, Claremont, CA, in 1990, he accepted a residency at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston CORE Fellowship program and continues to contribute to Houston’s art scene. Parazette has exhibited at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He is the recipient of a 2004 Artadia Fund for Art and Design and received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1994. Parazette is an Associate Professor at University of Houston and is represented by McClain Gallery, Houston and Marlborough Gallery, New York. |
