Jay Shinn at Barbara Davis Gallery
by June Mattingly // regularmain.com

Shinn’s trademark are thin stainless steel rods constructed in a way to decisively cast shadows
onto walls painted a barely noticeable warm gray color making the room a calming shadow
by itself. Almost as unnoticeable is the fact that many of the shadows in these spatial studies
emanating from simply composed objects are painted on the wall as well. Thus, the shadows,
working in collaboration with the physical presence in these ultra-minimal wall sculpture
installations, are the intrinsic element.
"Tri Divide," 2009, stainless steel and latex paint, 81" x 20" x 6"
"X in Four Parts," 2009, stainless steel and latex paint, 60" x 60" x 8"
Who can say it more directly than the artist? “Altering the light and surroundings
provides for several images from one form. Through all of this, no one image is final.
A semifinal stage is where my time with the work ends. The work continues its process.”
Corporate collections his art is included, One Arts Plaza Dallas, Microsoft Corp. W Hotels
and Neiman-Marcus. Shinn studied at the Skowhegan School in Maine, the New York
School of Visual Arts and his MFA comes from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1982.
