A Brave New World is a three person exhibition curated by Jennifer Ash, which explores themes
of biotechnology, in particular genetically modified organisms, agriculture and mass production.
The exhibition features an exciting series of hyper-surreal paintings by Chicago-area artist Timothy
Ripley, and innovative relief-style sculptures by New York-based artist Richard Lund and French
born Houston-based artist Magid Salmi.

Richard Lund’s elaborately designed works transform ordinary and predictable mass-produced
materials such as steel hardware, laser-cut acrylic and nylon fasteners into extraordinary objects,
which incorporate mathematically inspired patterns with rhythmical grids of color, becoming sleek,
innovative sculptures that both hypnotize and engage the viewer.

Magid Salmi’s work explores the processes and social ramifications of Genetically Modified
Engineering through a series of resin-based sculptures that contain unusual amalgamations of
food and electronic hardware suspended within Petri Dish-like forms. Pieces of Tofu and fruit are
pierced with electronic chips and wires; producing mutated anthropomorphic forms that appear
exquisite in one light yet horrifying in another, tapping into society’s fear of and obsession with
processed foods.

Timothy Ripley’s paintings feature micro-scientific examinations of surreal cellular-like organism
that blur the line between reality and fiction, science and art. Ripley’s complex process involves
creating a sculptural object from polymer clay, photographing the shape, digitally altering
the photograph, creating a high quality print, and then painting the image onto a wood
panel. ‘In contemporary society, more and more of our environment is experienced indirectly
through reproductions, and simulations. I want to create art that is simultaneously a photograph,
a digital image, a sculpture, an icon, and a painting’.
