WARNING: Just because you walk into a home and see what looks
like wood on the floor, that doesn’t mean that you’re walking on
genuine wood floors!

Heard of laminates? Well, laminates are a common option that
some builders or home restorers use. It gives the wood look
(because laminates actually have pictures of real wood glued
on to them or only a very thin layer of wood…the horror!) but
laminate “wood” flooring has no place in a true modern home;
modern homes are supposed to basic and it doesn’t get more
basic than genuine wood.

Therefore, to make sure that you’re not misled the next time you
go looking at contemporary homes advertising wood floors, here’s
something to keep in mind…

  •        Genuine wood floors will come as individual planks
usually between 2”-5” wide.

  •        Genuine wood floors will have character; that’s to say,
the planks won’t be perfect.

  •        Genuine wood floors will not feel perfectly flat to the touch
prior to being sanded and stained.

  •        Genuine wood floors will eventually get nicks and scratches
on them.

  •        Genuine wood floors, like any other natural wood, can be
sanded to diminish the appearance of nicks.

  •        Genuine wood floors are Mother Nature approved
heavy duty! ust when you think they’re done for, a fresh
sanding  and maybe a coat of varnish or stain will bring
them back to life.

As for the other types of ”wood” flooring, just know that one or more
of the above will be false for any so-called wood flooring that’s not
actually made of 100% genuine wood.  I am not completely opposed
to laminate wood flooring if it offers the particular look and style that
you desire, but I would suggest trying to find a genuine wood flooring
if possible.

Despite my affinity for genuine wood floors for modern homes, I do think
that you do have to be practical. Wood flooring isn’t appropriate for
all rooms in the home because wood does swell due to moisture and
humidity. Therefore, it’s best not to have wood flooring in bathrooms
and laundry rooms.  For those areas, I suggest tile or stone…because
it’s also simple and natural, just like a contemporary home should be.
