Wesley Harvey at Anya Tish Gallery by June Mattingly // regularmain.com At the Joan Grona in San Antonio a few weeks ago I was blown away when seeing Wesley's incredibly unique, dreamlike, complicated and unbelievably well-executed objects in his large mostly made out of clay installations. Until August 14 his work can be appreciated too at a favorite gallery of mine, the Anya Tish Gallery in Houston in a small, very selective group show titled "Creature Comforts" curated by an outside curator.

In the artist’s words: “…Pink flamingoes, garden gnomes and ceramic geese are some of my love interests… I am attracted to the tawdry qualities that these objects carry. I see the tasteless and trashy as beautiful and elegant… The objects and figurines of kitsch and cute carry a huge load of history and stories. This baggage usually sits upon a shelf for the life of the object. I want to examine the past of these everyday mundane objects and put their stories into my own personal narratives. I have become intrigued with the idea of a story within a story. I look back to see who shares their past with me and is willing to become part of a new narrative”
“…Mixed media plays an important role with my work and allows me to add multiple layers of surface decoration. I sometimes truly believe that more is better and less is inferior.” Contemporary artists move forward in their careers by exhibiting in valued galleries, museums, invitational/juried solo/group exhibitions, artist-run and/or non-profit spaces and for living expenses the financial support of grants, awards and prizes, and sales to corporations and private collectors. San Antonio artist Wesley Harvey’s resume places his work in all these categories plus his position as Adjunct Professor at the University of the Incarnate Word teaching ceramics; and only three years ago he received an MFA from Texas Tech in Lubbock.
